Talent Agencies Aren’t Obsolete: Here’re Five Reasons to Consider Them

Struggling to convince talent agencies may seem like a quaint idea in an era when contacts can be easily established through a message on a social media channel or email. It sounds against all reason to pay someone a share of your income for connecting you to the right person or company when you can do it yourself. Pervasive though it is, I think along those lines is not the best way to advance your career. Here are five reasons I believe the road that takes you through talent agencies is still the best way to build a career in arts.

High-Paying Jobs are With Agencies
When a reputed company needs a model, singer or writer it doesn’t put up an ad outside its office. It usually comes to a talent agency. A lot of the time, it is only the businesses who cannot afford to hire the services of an agent decide to do it themselves. So if you have not convinced a talent agent to represent you, you have already excluded yourself from the high-paying jobs in your field..

Talent Agencies are Safe
Everyone must have heard horror stories where some predatory person uploaded an ad listing fake creative jobs on Craigslist to attract the gullible and the novices. Unfortunately, it is more common that we would like to admit. Thankfully, you can protect yourself from falling into a scam. The way is hard, but safe. Go to a talent agency, impress them with your skills and convince them to be your agent.

Skill Development
Talent agents are people with years of experience behind them. They know what sells. By spending time with them, you can some of their intuition and improve your overall look. It is not hard. In fact, most agents take an active role in developing your skills because their bills are paid by helping you to find a well-paying job.

Exclusive Clients
Some businesses work exclusively with an agency. They will only hire models from that agency. It means, you will not even be considered if you don’t have that agency’s backing. What can you do? Work with that agency. It may not be the most convenient way out there, but it is certainly good for your career.

Legal Protection
Ever read a legal document? Try it and return if you can make sense of it. Most legal documents are confounding to average people. A company may take advantage of this complexity to hide things from you and bind you in an expensive-to-break long-term contract. You don’t want that. Thankfully, a way out is to work with an agent. Once you are in the protection of a talent agency, it will be their job to guard you from predatory companies, businesses and find you a well-paid job.

Because I was trained as an acoustics student, I know that one big reason many creative types decide to take things in their hands because it is not easy to connect with talent agencies. I was one of them. It was then I decided to do something about it.

Now I run the Entertainment Social Media Network. It is a social network for students of media studies, literature and other humanities majors. The network is a place where talent agencies are constantly looking for new talent. By joining the network you can connect with those agencies and lay the foundation for a career in your favorite field.
